Water passes a UV lamp on its way to the tap. The 254 nm light damages the DNA of microorganisms, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, treating the water without chemicals and adding no taste or smell. The lamp is sealed in a quartz sleeve inside a stainless steel chamber, and five sizes cover flows from 7.6 to 91 l/min. Fit it last, after the sediment and carbon filters, so clear water lets the UV light reach every microorganism. Size it to your peak flow, not the average: water that moves too fast gets too short a dose. Leave room at one end to slide the lamp and sleeve out for changing and cleaning, and keep it switched on, because the lamp only treats water while it is lit.
